My handcrafted vessels are turned on a traditional wood working lathe using both fresh and seasoned wood.
When I turn freshly cut wood it is still very high in moisture. After delicately turning a piece it is carefully dried over an extended period of time to allow it to warp and move naturally before it dries and settles into its final form. Whilst the vessel is drying the different grain structures and knots create tension which naturally distorts the form. The result is a unique vessel with a beautiful organic form. Depending on the wood the movement can be subtle or severe but it is always natural.
The bottom of each vessel is finished by hand with a gouge before I carve my signature.
